Unique in Europe

The Leistungszentrum Elektroniksysteme (LZE) is a joint initiative of the Fraunhofer-Gesellschaft, Fraunhofer IIS, Fraunhofer IISB, and Friedrich-Alexander University Erlangen-Nürnberg (FAU), in addition to other non-university research institutes and various industry partners. The center grew out of many years of intense cooperation between the Fraunhofer institutes in Erlangen and FAU, in addition to the unique concentration of electronic systems research activities and industries based in Erlangen – Nuremberg Metropolitan Region.

Research excellence and joint planning have created the foundation for a comprehensive, long-term strategic partnership between Fraunhofer, FAU and the electronics industry. The construction of the LZE was started in 2015 with its pilot phase. In addition to dealing with current scientific issues, the LZE focuses on the establishment of an efficient joint transfer structure of the research partners and the development of corresponding cooperation models and offers. At the beginning of 2018, the establishment of a complementary legal structure was completed with LZE e.V. and LZE GmbH. The second phase of the LZE has been running since 2019. The LZE is funded by the Bavarian State Ministry for Economic Affairs, Regional Development and Energy.

Under a strategic roof we work on complex electronic systems for the challenges of the future. Our goal is to lead the technologies of our partners to economic success. For this we are breaking new ground in excellent research, transfer and training.

The research activities of the LZE address complex electronic systems for current industrial applications. In order to meet the high demands on performance, efficiency, robustness, compactness, or safety and reliability, the development of such systems requires a multitude of competences such as information and communication technology, power electronics, sensor technology, control engineering or material development. These are covered in a wide range by the community of research partners of the LZE.

Central pilot projects (Phase I) and lead projects (Phase II) form the core of research and development at the LZE and thus the starting point for further research activities. The pilot projects in LZE Phase I focused on power electronics for the conversion and distribution of electrical energy as well as low-power electronics for applications with the lowest energy consumption. The lead projects in Phase II aim at various electronic systems for the realization of digital change. These central research projects demonstrate and further develop the scientific capabilities and interinstitutional cooperation of the partners and the location.
